Which head have you got?

There were three types of 5 port Speedwell cylinder head, The GT, The Clubman & the very rare Clubman R.

All the above heads utilised the same basic casting and are easily confused, this is how to tell which one you have.

If you look at the front of the head by the thermostat take off you will see a letter or letters and a number. A Clubman head will look like the picture opposite, the "C" signified "Clubman" and the number is that heads individual item No. If this area is stamped "GT" then the head is a GT, and if it is stamped "C / R" then it is a Clubman Racing spec head.

The specifications of these 3 types of head are as follows;

Speedwell Alloy GT Head.

Inlet Valve size = 1.1"

Exhaust Valve Size = 1.0"

Suitable for = 850 only

(part No: CH 100, Price New £39,10)

Speedwell Alloy Clubman Head.

Inlet Valve size = 1.25"

Exhaust Valve Size = 1.0"

Suitable for = Upto 1152cc

(part No: CH 200, Price New £49,10)

Speedwell Alloy Race Head.

Inlet Valve size = 1.32"

Exhaust Valve Size = 1.156"

Suitable for = All Racing applications

(part No: CH 200R, Price New £59,10)

As you can see, if you compare the above to current valve sizes, the Speedwell heads were hardly generous in this department!
